Promenade of Light

PROMENADE OF LIGHT LIPPSTADT

"LIGHT - WATER LIFE": Starting from the mission statement of Lippstadt the “promenade of light" makes the connection between light and water to its artistic subject. In the context of the light art project “Hellweg – a route of light”, that builds a main focus in the collective culture work of cities and communities of the Hellweg region, the native of Lippstadt Dirk Raulf has conceived the promenade of light. He coordinates the specific artistic contributions of the project.

The promenade of light marks a series of new artistic attractions in the cityscape of Lippstadt. The installations deal in different kinds with the architectural, historical, natural and social environment. Thus the project obtains a new and unique connection of urban structure by means of the flow of cultural landscape and light-artistic reflection. City, nature and art are linked by a number of references and associativities : Live – Water – Lightart.

Stefan Sous
“MILKY WAY" (2005/06)
Place: Isle at the Lippebug

An isle is situated in the middle of the course of the river with on unique tree. There is a landing stage beside the tree, as to angle, to bath or to land a boat. The stage is not as usual made of wood but of brightly shinning light canals. The isle, which is disappearing in the dark, turn into a location of desire.     The observer remains spaciously separated, but lost in thoughts he follows the light, enters the isle, isle of the lost, isle of stars, isle of imagination.

„MILKY WAY is the third of the series of my runways, launching platforms for heavenly skyrockets…As a door to the universe they expand the available space about the factor cosmos, the isle is caught up of the factor DREAM.”

Claudia Wissmann
“GLITZERBAUM" / „TWINKLE TREE“ (2006)
Place: Lippebug / Lippe-Residenz

A chestnut tree, which rises over the surface of the water, carries hundreds of mirror chains as its second leaves. The permanent move of the mirrors creates the twinkling of the tree. The mirrors reflect the environment, multiply the daylight and artificial light, the tree shimmers and shines and is reflected by the water. The tree changes his “moods” with the time of the day and the season, participates in the daily live and transcends it at the same time. The environment itself is becoming a permanent and active part of the artwork; an artistic solution, which contains simultaneously complexity and depth within its amazing simplicity.

Christoph Hildebrand
“ARCHE" / „ARK“ (2003)
Place: Mattenklodtsteg

At the begin of  the promenade of light a float made of boles forms a platform for a greenhouse, which is equipped with blue neon signs. Christoph Hildebrand has been inspired for his “ark” by the present and history of Lippstadt. The signs, developed by him, reflect – in the truest sense of the word – industry, handcraft and agriculture, nature and culture, tradition and modern spirit and location specific symbols with global signs. The flourishing and misdoing of the signs creates a new place of artificial nature amidst the old park scenery of Lippstadt.

Gereon Lepper
“NACHTFLUG" / „NIGHT-FLIGHT“ (2003)
Place: Friedrichschleuse

The work of Gereon Lepper is building a balance system, which reacts to wind and gravitation energy. Steel, aluminium, counterweight – on the first sight the sculpture appears technical and functional. Is it windy, the sculpture awakes and communicates unexpected lightness and poetry by swinging its wings. “Night-flight” combines kinetic sculpture and light art. Floodlighted by ground spotlights, the wings which are whitely coated from below become reflecting illuminants. Light effects, water reflections, gravity and wind energy: the natural elements agree to a symbiosis with industrial material.

Claudia Schmacke
“UNDINE" (2004/05)
Place: Wilhelmschule/Steinwehr

At a less moved section of the river Lippe there is an intervallic green swirl visible in the water. Without a noticeable external reason the swirl is built at the surface of the water, whereas the water is slowly coloured bright green. The swirl is gaining power and parallel the light intensity accelerates. Afterwards the swirl is calming down and at the same time the green lightning is expiring. After a short break and silence – everything is unimpressive and nothing points at a new happening – the brightly moving appearance is repeated, but now as a noisy sparkling geyser.
