Retrospection to the Economic Summit
“Europe and the Hanseatic League – two words for one idea”, said Günter Verheugen Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Enterprise and Industry in his opening words at the Economic Summit held on May 11th, 2007 in Lippstadt.
The aim of the historical Hanse had been the improvement of economic relationships and securing trade among the members. These also were the main intentions of the EEC fifty years ago and still are central to the EU today.
The focus of the Economic Summit, which was held at an International Hanse Convention for the first time, was: “Improved networking among the member cities as a carrier for economic growth against the background of globalization.” |

Dr. Jürgen Behrend, Chairman and President of the Hella KGaA Hueck & Co stressed the necessity to install company networks and partnerships all over the world. He introduced the impressive number of joint ventures and cooperations in which Hella plays a leading role and said this was the way to secure the future of a medium-sized enterprise in globalized markets.
In his speech Manfred Maus, founder of the OBI- home improvement store chain, gave a number of examples for the importance of cultural and social aspects in the various countries when one tries to set up a new business. Putting the respective customer – the human being into the centre of planning and action is a prerequisite to a successful international network. |

| The Minister for Innovation of North Rhine Westphalia, Andreas Pinkwart claimed that a first class education system including schools, universities and permanent training on the job is the key to a successful future for the western industrial nations, especially Germany. |
| |
Andreas Becker, WestLB introduced the supporting networks the banks have built to help small and medium sized enterprises to install international businesses.
After the speeches all the lecturers where invited to discuss the chances and risks of globalization and the comparative advantages the Hanseatic network offers its member cities. The discussion was very lively, sometimes even emotional, because at first site globalization many times means that jobs and positions are being relocated abroad. On the other hand many western countries do take advantage of the globalization by making very good revenues by selling the (in eastern countries) cheaply produced products to the western world. Dr. Behrend emphasized that the global economic competition by itself was good and necessary but it could only be fair when production/work-, safety - and social standards were adjusted to modern levels all over the world.. |

Answering the question of the presenter, Martin Krigar, editor-in-chief of the local newspaper Westfälischer Anzeiger, it was agreed that the hanseatic network should improve the economic cooperation of the enterprises in the member cities and thus could be profitable for everybody.
This was the perfect lead to the introduction of the online networking database that had been set up by the Business Development Agency (BDA) in Lippstadt and is now ready to support any request for economic partnership among the hanseatic cities.
Wilhelm Coprian, CEO of the BDA and Dr. Heinz Günter Focken, First Chairman of the Hansa Society Lippstadt invited the hanseatic community to keep the data of their respective cities up to date and make wide and creative use of this tool. (Follow link at on top of this page or www.hanse.org)

After the lunch break at the city theater the international and national guests of the Economic summit were invited to get inside views of local companies in the afternoon. The guests split up into seven groups and were taken to the company sites spread all over Lippstadt by bus.

EU-commissioner Dr. Günter Verheugen will be visiting the Economic Forum on the occasion of the International Hanse Convention in May The preparations for the Hanse Convention are running at full speed.
The Economic Forum planned by the association for commercial promotion (WFL) is taking shape. Currently, the organizers are looking forward to an accepted invitation from Brussels: Dr. Günter Verheugen, commissioner of industry, announced his active attendance at the event on Friday, May 5, 2007 at the municipal theatre.
Together with European representative Helmut Kuhne and mayor Sommer, the association for commercial promotion (WFL) contacted Verheugens office already in the fall of the past year. The concept of the Hanse Convention and the Economic Forum evoked great interest so that it was now confirmed that Dr. Verheugen will accept Lippstadt´s invitation. Consequently, the organizers put into effect their idea to stimulate the subject “opportunities of economic networking within the hanseatic community” with the aid of a high profile event for domestic and international merchants, business representatives and Hansa delegates.
„We receive the opportunity to present the economic site Lippstadt directly to an important EU-representative as well as to point out problems and express expectations”, as the president of the association for commercial promotion (WFL) Coprian points out.

Economic Summit which will be held on the 11th of May in 2007 is introduced to international guests by KWL (The Culture Company) and WFL (Business Development Agency Lippstadt LTD.)

The fact that the Hanseatic League has, next to touristy and historic aspects, a vast economic potential is recognized by a growing number of members of the Hanse committee.
Thus the „Hansegesellschaft Lippstadt“ plans to hold an international economic summit on the second day of the Hanse Convention in Lippstadt in 2007. Representatives of regional worldwide acting companies as well as politicians will be invited to give and discuss statements referring to the potentials and chances of building and using international networks. This concept and the aims of the second day of the Hanse Convention was introduced and discussed with a group of delegates from the Hanse organization: Mrs. Quiring-Perl, deputy Major of the City of Neuss, Mr. Wolters, Economic Development Council of the City of Neuss, and Mr. Borst from the city of Hattem in the Netherlands reviewed the suggestions of the Hanse team from Lippstadt in depth and agreed fully with the proposals. The guests from Neuss offered their assistance in acquiring honourable speakers for the event. Mr. Borst suggested to present best practice examples for the use of economic networks from the areas where the haseatic cities are located.
“The well established relations of the members of the Hanseatic League lent themselves to using them for economic networking”, states Mr. Coprian, CEO of the Business Development Agency (BDA) Josie Olk, (BDA) is currently conducting the development of a database which will be a major tool for networking among the members of the Hanseatic League: At the first step, all the cities will be listed with links, the names and contact data of the respective majors and which is no less important the names and addresses of people from the economic world. The database will be launched on the Hanse Convention in 2007 and all the members of the Hanse will be invited to bring this tool to life by entering local data that is of economic and/or political relevance for investors.
The talks will be continued at the fall summit of the Hanseatic League in Lippstadt in November.
